Modular trained pilot, Matthew Senior (pictured left), began his two year First Officer Placement Programme with BA Cityflyer this week.

The new Programme was launched in October and is a work placement and sponsored training opportunity specifically for modular trained pilots and is designed to progress the successful applicant towards a full time, permanent role as a Cityflyer First Officer.

Matthew will carry out the salaried role of Navigation, Weights and Performance Officer for the airline, before completing Kura’s Bestpilot programme and type and line training on an Embraer 170/190 , all paid for by the airline.

“My first day went well,” said Matthew. “There’s lots to learn but the people are great and I can’t wait to get started! It has been quite a journey to get to this point. After completing modular pilot training in 2011, I started sweeping hangars at Retford Airport. I was promoted to a fireman, refueller and ramp handler and shortly afterwards, was promoted to tower as a tower operator on the air ground radio.

“I started freelancing as a flight instructor as well and gained my examiner rating and aerobatic instructor rating. I applied for my first airline job this year, because it felt like the right job for me and I could not be happier about how everything has worked out!

“I have just begun the Navigation, Performance and Weights Officer role. There’s a lot to take in of course, but I am really looking forward to the whole programme,” he added.

The next intake for this programme is likely to be September 2017.
