Resilient Pilot, the not-for-profit organisation created to support pilots and cabin crew, is to host regular face-to-face Skills Refresher Days for type-rated pilots.
The events will be delivered with Resilient Pilot ATO partners – Skyborne Airline Academy in Cheltenham and Leading Edge Aviation Academy in Oxford – and are in addition to monthly, virtual workshops.
The Skills Refresher Days provide an opportunity for type-rated pilots to prepare for an upcoming Licence Proficiency Check (LPC) or simply refresh their handling skills. They consist of a half-day technical and half-day non-technical refresher and will be run by experienced Resilient Pilot TRI/TRE/SFI/SFEs and CRMT mentors.
The technical module involves time in a B737 MAX FTD-1 (Skyborne) or A320 FTD-1 (Leading Edge Aviation) Fixed Base Simulator. One hour will be spent as Pilot Flying (PF), the second hour as Pilot Monitoring (PM).
The aim of the session is to establish the pilot’s readiness to complete an upcoming LPC or refresh handling skills. The flying exercises will include general handling, TCAS, OEI manually flown 3D App, GA, Landing and EFATO.
Resilient Pilot’s instructors can work to whichever SOPs the pilot is familiar with, and these sessions will operate under a non-jeopardy policy to help build confidence, competence and resilience.
A post sim wash-up will allow the participants and instructor to discuss the level of competence observed, and guidance can be given on whether further training is advisable prior to completing an expensive LPC if this was the session goal. Resilient Pilot can also assist in arranging an LPC and there is the potential for DWP funding for eligible pilots.
The non-tech module in the classroom will focus upon skills that have been identified by regulators around the world to be at risk due to lack of operational exposure. The session goal is to help pilots better prepare for those startle/surprise events in a post pandemic world of aviation.
On completion of the full day, pilots will receive a certificate of attendance to present at future employment opportunities as a record of their commitment to continued professional development despite being non-operational.
The Skills Refresher Days will start this month, August 2021, and there will be regular weekday and weekend dates available at each of the two UK locations.
Resilient Pilot plans to introduce additional locations within and outside of the UK in response to demand.
The team has worked hard to secure best value rates for pilots hit by the pandemic to maintain their skills whilst not operational, and Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) funding may be available for eligible pilots to access for a Skills Refresher Day and LPC package.

Introduced in July 2021 to complement the established monthly, virtual technical workshops that Resilient Pilot hosts, these monthly, non-technical skills workshops provide an opportunity for non-operational pilots and cabin crew from around the world and various operational backgrounds to work together virtually to refresh and maintain key CRM skills for effective human performance.
The workshops reflect the CRM refresher requirements contained in UK CAA Standards Doc 29 and EASA ORO FC.115.
Facilitated by Resilient Pilot and Resilient Crew mentor CRMTs, participants will review relevant case studies, explore a holistic approach to wellbeing and foster creative thinking to learn lessons by applying CRM principles to help better prepare for getting airborne.
