Government rejects offshore safety recommendation

North-Sea2-300x156The Government has rejected a recommendation by the House of Commons Transport Select Committee to hold a public inquiry into offshore helicopter safety.

The British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) has responded with a statement. “We are extremely disappointed that the Government has dismissed our safety concerns.

“There is clearly a difference of opinion between pilots operating in the North Sea and the oil and gas industry as to whether commercial pressure in the awarding of contracts has a bearing on safety and we will continue to press for full public inquiry on this issue.

“We do not understand what the oil and gas industry has to fear. BALPA would accept whatever the inquiry found and we owe it the memories of those who lost their lives and to the future safety of crews, passengers and their families to continue our work to shine a light on this.”
